1500 years before our time there has been life and colonies in this zone. From the bronze ages until today it has been inhabited. After the phoenicians, the romans, the arabs and the christians have written their history on this land that still speaks today. The first civiliations go back to the XV century b.c. the Bronze ages, after that around the X century b.c the colonization of the phoenicians took place. The first ones that began to structure towns and cities...something that was finally appreciated centuries later, more specifically in III b.c. with the romans and their concept of great cities. Almuñecar was an important roman city which revolved around the red tuna, and the sauce they made called garum. They fished these red tunas in the mediterrenean and conserved them in their factories. In this era they also built important temples and roman theatres.
In our ages, in the VIII century the arabs came to the peninsula. Abderraman I comes in 755 and sea invasions, at the same time being a city revolving around agriculture and fishing. Almuñecar during the Al-Andalus belonged to the kingdom of Taifa de Granada, and was reference point to the kingdom, a coastal reference.
Almuñecar was also a historic location in which the arab Treaty of 1489 was signed three years before they actually acted upon it.
As years went buy closer to our era, Almuñecar has been called SEXI, as the phoenicians called i; Hins-Al. Monacar, as the muslims called it and lastly Almuñecar it´s actual denomination. |
